Malhamdale

The local area of Malham is a perfect setting for a break in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, both for the keen rambler or those wanting something less strenuous. Within a mile of the village there is Malham Cove a 250ft limestone cliff topped by a unique limestone pavement. A short stroll from River House you will find Gordale Scar a deep rift in the landscape once painted by “Turner”, and Janet’s Foss, a enchanting waterfall where local legends abound.

River House is centrally located in Malham Village, amidst the stunning dales scenery. With the Pennine Way and other Yorkshire Dales walking and cycling routes running just past the front door, we are an ideal location.

The Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales is best known for its stunning scenery with deep valleys, of which Malhamdale is just one. River House is ideally situated for exploring the southern dales around Malham and Skipton or the northern dales around Hawes and Reeth.

There really is something for everyone in the Yorkshire Dales from walking and cycling to historic houses and loads of family attractions. Alternatively you may just decide to relax and enjoy the scenery or visit one of the many village pubs in the dales.

Janet’s Foss = in Malham home to queen of the fairy’s , Catrigg Force = is an absolute gem – a magical, mysterious place! The waterfall is hidden from view in a small secluded copse 1 mile upstream of Stainforth village. Stainforth foss = Close to the village of Stainforth, just to the north of Settle, is the magnificent waterfall of Stainforth Force which is on the River Ribble.

Appletreewick

A best kept secret of the Yorkshire Dales, in the village of Appletreewick about 30 min drive from Malham heading towards Grassington a lovely scenic spot for wild swimming with rapids further upstream where rubber tubing is great fun.

Hardraw Force

Hardraw Force lies less than a mile away from Hawes in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. At 100ft, it is said to be the longest single drop waterfall in England. It is were Robin Hood Prince of Thieves bathed in the film it is cold and beware of stones falling from the waterfall.

Malham to Grassington circular

You can not go wrong by heading out of Malham towards Malham Tarn with Malham cove on your left and head to wards Arncliffe, this circular drive take you round to Grassington, a lovely dales village with tea rooms shops and a Yorkshire Dales National park centre. With you then heading from Grassington towards Hetton and the small villages of Airton and Kirkby Malham, and returning driving up Malhamdale back to the village of Malham.

Head down Malhamdale to the village of Kirkby Malham and over the tops to Settle, picking up the B6479 to Horton in Ribblesdale, then of to Ribblehead viaduct which is further along on the B6479. From there head towards Dent and from Dent down to Casterton and Kirkby Lonsdale. From Kirkby Lonsdale the return roads to Malham can be the direct  A65 and from Settle returning to Malham from over the tops.

Malham to Skipton circular via Bolton Abby and Appletreewick on the return journey.

Head from Malham down Malhamdale and picking up the A65 in Gargrave heading left towards Skipton. It has a town Markets 5 days a week and Skipton castle with its fabulous history. lots of parking can be found thoughout the town of Skipton. From Skipton head towards Addingham and though Addingham picking up the B6160 to Bolton Abby and onto the small villages of Appletreewick, Hebden, and Grassington. Taking the shorter route back to Malham via Hetton, Calton, Airton and then onto Malham, or head from Grassington to Kilnsey and Arncliffe returning back to Malham via the Malham Tarn road.

River House is an Ideal base for lots of lovely walks in the area of the Yorkshire Dales National park and beyond. Situated in the village of malham we have the Pennine Way running just past the front door. This is just one of the major walking routes to run near the house. with the Dales High Way, Settle loop, being just a few more.

We have a wide range of guides, maps and walking options at River House, that can be borrowed or photo copied making lots of suitable walks for just about any requirement.

Malham Cove Walk

Malham Cove is a magnificent limestone amphitheatre formed through ice and water erosion during the last million years.just a 15 min walk from the house, A section of the Pennine Way leads from Malham Village to the Cove, ascending the western grassy side of the 250-feet high cliff. At the top there is a remarkable limestone pavement with its clints (small flat blocks) and grikes (deep crevices between), and a sensational view over the valley. Beyond, the Dry Valley leads northwards towards the Water Sinks and Malham Tarn.

The Yorkshire 3 peaks

Just over the hill towards Settle we have the wonderful Yorkshire 3 peeks.The Yorkshire Three Peaks walk is a famous challenge walk in the Yorkshire Dales. It takes in three of the highest summits in the area; Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Each of these hills is worthy of spending a day on with many varied and interesting routes available. Each year, however, many walkers attempt to walk all three peaks in one day with most starting from Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The route is 24.5 miles (39km) long and has over 5,000 feet (1600m) of ascent and descent and most people aim to complete it in less than 12 hours.

The Pennine Way

The Pennine Way has something to offer every long distance walker. This is a 270-mile walk that will take you from the Peak District National Park along the Pennine ridge through the Yorkshire Dales, up into Northumberland, across the Cheviots, and into the Scottish Borders. there plenty of historical and cultural interest too. Starting at the scene of the Kinder Scout mass trespasses of the 1930s, you walk through the Southern Pennines, cradle of the Industrial Revolution, pass Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters, across the limestone country of the Yorkshire Dales, and enter a huge Pennine area that was exploited by every kind of mining activity.

Cycling in the Yorkshire Dales

RAt River House we provide excellent facilities for cyclists when using us as a base for a nights stay or a few when touring this stunning part of Yorkshire. We offer a great location to stop and rest during your travels.

There are so many cycling routes close to us at River House. The Yorkshire dales cycle way been just one that runs just past the front door, up through Malhamdale and up over the tops to Settle and Ribblesdale. The Way of the roses is another very popular cycle route that runs just south of Malham, from Morecambe on the west coast, to Bridlington on the east coast.

Bird watching in the Yorkshire Dales

Bird Watching

There is such a lot of bird life in and around malham the most famous of which are our Peregrine Falcons, they live on Malham cove each year, Peregrines started nesting at the cove 20 years ago and since then they have raised more than 40 young. Also there is Malham Tarn, England’s highest freshwater lake, over 200 different species of bird have been recorded visiting Malham Tarn National Nature Reserve. New bird hides were built a few years ago in the wetland area of the tarn. Look out for curlew’s – one of the most distinct wading birds.

Rock Climbing

In the Yorkshire Dales National Park, there are 2 main rock types – gritstone and limestone, and these have long attracted climbers. There are many nearby climbable cliffs near malham, the intimidating ‘big three’ of Kilnsey, Malham Cove and Gordale Scar, tackled by climbers all year round. Most of the limestone cliffs are better suited to experienced climbers whilst beginners will generally find gritstone a more amenable medium on which to learn and practice.

You don’t have to go far in the Yorkshire Dales before becoming aware that caves and potholes are important to the geology and landscape of the area. Ingleborough Cave, first entered and made accessible in 1837, is the premier show cave in the Yorkshire Dales – www.ingleboroughcave.co.uk

The other cave in the area, is over towards grassington, Stump Cross Caverns is one of Britain’s premier show caves, located in Nidderdale on the border of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
